  I enjoyed this book (not knowing there was a pre-quel of sorts set 20 years prior) for many of the same reasons other reviewers cited: its twisty plotting, dark themes leavened by some very good, snarky humor (that LA is a pistol!) and intriguing :// Simply put, this book is amazing!
